CT scan (Computed Tomography scan) is a medical imaging technique that uses X-rays and computer processing to create detailed cross-sectional images of the body's internal structures. It provides more detailed information than a standard X-ray by capturing multiple images from different angles and combining them to produce a 3D representation
All that is required for the procedure is your referral and your presence. Wearing loose-fitting clothing is recommended for ease, and occasionally you may be asked to change into a gown and remove any metal objects, such as watches, jewellery, or piercings, as these items may interfere with the quality of the images.
CT scans utilize X-rays to produce detailed images of the body, offering critical insights for the diagnosis of various medical conditions. While they do involve exposure to ionizing radiation, the risk associated with a single CT scan is minimal, and the diagnostic benefits often outweigh the potential risks.
It is important to note that CT scans can pose risks to unborn babies. If you are pregnant or could potentially be pregnant, please inform your healthcare provider so that alternative imaging options can be considered.
In most cases, yes an appointment is required. There are some exams which require you to be well hydrated or fasted, and some exams may need contrast in order to visualise the region of the body. Please call us here to make an appointment or if you have any questions, and we can let you know what will be required for your scan.
